An 8 week old puppy is like a newborn baby, they can become over stimulated. You get the puppy home and everyone wants to handle him and play with him. You’re excited and want to show him off to friends, so you take him for visits etc.
None of this benefits the puppy. Try to imagine how he feels. All of the above mentioned is HIGHLY stressful to your new puppy. He is in a strange environment, away from his siblings. New noises, new smells, nothing is familiar to him and he’s stressing... not to mention the car or plane ride he took to get to your home. That was his first big stressor . He will be highly stressed his first few nights sleeping alone. When puppies are stressed, they don’t eat, can have diarreah, and become sick.
The first week in his new home, he should remain in it with no visitors. He needs time to get used to his new environment, new smells, his new routine, and you.
NO WALKS
NO VISITORS
NO TRAVELING ( except to the Vet)
NO OVER HANDLING
NO OVER PLAYING
NO CHANGES IN DIET...not even treats.
After the first week home you can take the puppy and visit people that you know have their dogs routinely vaccinated . DO NOT go to places such as Pet Smart, pet stores, dog parks or take walks on the sidewalks. He has not had all his vaccinations and strange dogs have been there. You don’t know what diseases they may carry.
Your puppy will come to you, having his first vet visit with my vet. My vet will give him an examination and his first vaccinations. You need to take the puppy to see your vet, the first week he is home. Your vet will only do a “ wellness check” on him to confirm what my vet said about the puppy’s health. This visit is necessary for my one year genetic Health Guarantee to be effective. Your vet will then schedule your puppy for the rest of his vaccinations. He will slso start him on his Heart worm meds. He will want to put him on a flea & tick preventative. I treat my dogs naturally because of the poison in the prescribed preventatives. This is your choice but I suggest that you research the side effects. I use Wondercide. They have a website explaining their natural product.
When at the Vet,
DO NOT put the puppy on the ground where sick dogs have walked. He has not had all of his vaccinations and can pick up anything.
DO NOT put the puppy on the floor inside for same reason.
DO ask the technician to please sanitize the table before putting puppy on it. YOU are your puppy’s advocate, only YOU can protect him from harm.
After your puppy has had all of his vaccinations and Rabies you can take him anywhere. In the meantime, practice leash walking around the house or in own yard.
